“On the right side of the chart there are various steps called the States of Release. There are five States of Release (Grades 0-IV) up to Power Release (Grade V). Above this is a Whole Track Release (Grade VI) and above that is a state we call Clear. ....

The left-hand side of the chart describes the very important steps of training on which one gains the knowledge and abilities necessary to deliver the Grades of Release to another. The skill acquired is a discipline in living and a know-how of the parts of life. These things are what this Chart describes. It is a guide for the individual from the point where he first becomes dimly aware of a Scientologist or Scientology and shows him how and where he should move up in order to make it.”

History of the Grade Chart - a) General overview  (page 1, index page)

I got to look into this while researching the tracks of David Mayo. During his time of reign the Bridge was turned upside down (1978-82). There are indications that he was involved in various of these changes. This discovery and various related information actually incited me to dig deeper into this and finally motivated me to do this Grade Chart research covering the first chart released in 1965 to present time.

Back to Main Index Overview and explanations

Bridge drawing from Ability 288, ca Nov 75

The basic idea is:

“There are about 52 levels of awareness from Unexistence up to the state of CLEAR.
By ‘Level of Awareness’ is meant that of which a being is aware.
A being who is at a level on this scale is aware only of that level and the others below it.
To get a case gain such a person must become aware of the level next above him. And so on up in orderly sequence, level by level.
If you skip a person on one level several levels up, he or she will experience only an unreality and will not react. This is expressed as ‘no-case-gain’. On the E-Meter it registers as ‘No Tone Arm Action’ meaning there is no meter registry of change on the meter control lever (tone arm).
A person audited a bit below or at his level of awareness gets ‘Tone Arm Action’, Case Gain and has cognitions (new concepts of life).”          LRH
(from HCO PL 5 May 65 “Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart”)

Further we find some important hints in HCOB 12 Jun 70 “Programming of Cases”:

“Every action taken on a Case by a CASE SUPERVISOR (or an auditor doing his own C/S actions) should be part of a definite outlined PROGRAM for that case.

PROGRAM Definition – A program is defined as the sequence of actions session by session to be undertaken on a case by the C/S in his directions to the auditor or auditors auditing the case.

The master program for every case is given on the Classification and Gradation Chart issued from time to time. ...

A pc must attain the full ability noted on the Chart before going up to the next level of the Chart.”          LRH

The Bridge

Back to Main Index What to expect (1):  ‘Ability Gained’ and ‘Inability Lost’  (1969-70)

“END PHENOMENA,  those indicators in the pc and meter which show that a chain or process is ended. It shows in Dianetics that basic on that chain has been erased and in Scientology that the pc has been released on that process being run. Any Dianetics auditing below power processing has four definite reactions in the pc which show the process is ended. (1) floating needle, (2) cognition, (3) very good indicators, (pc happy), (4) erasure of the final picture audited. The 0 to IV Scientology end phenomena are (1) floating needle, (2) cognition, (3) very good indicators, (4) release. (HCOB 20 Feb 70)  Abbr. EP.”
(from ‘Dianetics and Scientology: Technical Dictionary’, 1975 edition)

The 1st December 1966 Grade Chart was the first to add an ‘Attainment’ column. The 1st January 1968 Grade Chart renamed that column to ‘Abilities Attained’ .
The same were maintained in the 1st September 1969 Grade Chart and the OT levels upto OT VI were added. The March 1970 Grade Chart is identical to this chart.
The June 1970 Grade Chart then rephrased most of it and separated it into 2 columns: ‘Ability Gained’ & ‘Inability Lost’. It also indicated for all the Lower Grades the 3 Flows (F1: other to self; F2: self to other & F3: other to other). This chart had erroneously listed the EP for OT VII at OT II. Instead OT VII was lacking any circumscription for its EP although the chart was listing the EP for OT VIII. This was all corrected in the December 1970 Grade Chart which was just a corrective and updated release of the chart.
Then the January 1975 Grade Chart for the larger part reverted back to the abridged entries (one column only) as found in the previous charts from 1969 and early 1970. Excepting though the OT Sections that had erased these EP circumscriptions alltogether. They also did not reappear in the in 1978 nor the in 1980 released charts and by January 1982 the original upper OT levels (OT IV-VIII) themselves were even dropped and replaced with something else.

These circumscriptions as found in these early Grade Charts are interesting and may increase understanding about these. Please note that in case you would compare this to presently used Grade Charts that New OT IV-VIII are not the same action as the original OT IV-VIII addressed in the column here below. In that sense it is interesting to see that these circumscriptions for the original OT Levels are only found in publications and releases from prior to 1974.

Various notices found in various issues of the periodical Clear News (AOLA Edition) that provide for an interesting insight, firstly what it is about, secondly how it is promoted. The text is exactly as they appear in this periodical (italics and bold as in the original). They only have been divided up in below column for easy comparison and consultation.
The very last issue of Clear News (AOLA Edition) that made mention of particular achievements or details concerning these higher levels was ‘Clear News 93 (AOLA edition)’ [ca Sept/Oct 73]. Also the following release of the Grade Chart from 1974-75 actually removed these circumscribed end phenomena's.

Solo   SOLO AUDIT COURSE
The Solo Audit Course teaches the Solo Student to become an excellent Solo Auditor so he can obtain MAXIMUM gains from his Advance Course levels.
SOLO AUDITOR'S COURSE
Do this course well. There's no sorrier sight than a fumbling Solo Auditor ARC-breaking himself as a PC. Almost all subsequent bogs on Advanced Courses trace back to not learning how to audit well enough in the first place. When this is found to be the case a quick retrain on the Solo Course will bring the Solo Auditor up to par. Then he'll win from there on out.
THE SOLO AUDITOR'S COURSE
The Advanced Courses, from Grade VI on up, are Solo Audited levels. It is most important that you are able to Solo Audit well. Almost all later trouble on Advanced Courses traces back to not learning how to Solo Audit well enough in the first place.
You can Solo Audit. It's easy, on the standard Solo Auditor's Course.
R6   On the second part of this course the now competent Solo Auditor audits the process to Grade 6 Release. The highest State of Release from the bank. GRADE 6 (R6EW)
Your first big win as a Solo Auditor. This level marvelously cools off your “favorite” dramatizations and you regain the power to act on your own determinism.
GRADE VI (R6EW)
Your first big win as a Solo Auditor and the last step before Clear! This level marvelously cools off your “favorite” dramatizations and you regain the power to act on your own determinism.
CC   CLEARING COURSE
After countless eons of mental entrapment you can emerge CLEAR, free!
On the Clearing Course you don't become released from your bank or make a small part vanish - you erase all of it!
This literally leaves you bright and shining as a Thetan, free to resume your natural abilities as an OT!
CLEARING COURSE
If you did Solo and Grade 6 well, your own skill as an auditor will carry you through to the highest win possible - total personal freedom forever from your own bank. No treasure or earthly reward compares to this. But there are less than 4000 Clears today. Knock out any barriers in your way and move up to Clear FAST.
CLEARING COURSE
Clear! Freedom from reactivity - the goal of millions down through the ages! With Solo and Grade VI done well, you will find the Clearing Course an easy step to take. As a Clear you will be better able to help the people around you.
Knock out any barriers in your way and move up to Clear FAST.
I For Clears the next step is Section I O.T. The incredible beginning of the lessons of O.T. O.T. I extroverts you and brings about an awareness of yourself as a thetan in relation to others and the physical universe. OT I
The first level after obtaining the State of Clear is OT I and is like the cream topping on the cake. It is highly recommended that persons completing the Clearing Course route right on to OT I as it stabilizes the being in his new found condition. OT I is a series of solo drills designed by Ron to refamiliarize a thetan with others and the physical universe. It gets one in tune with the environment by providing the opportunity to get out and look around.
OT I
OT I is the next step after Clear. Most Clears take this step right after their completion of the Clearing Course. A Clear is clear on the first dynamic. Now it's time to try your thetan wings - that's what OT I is about. OT I extroverts a being and brings about an awareness of himself as a thetan in relation to others and the Physical Universe.
OT I
Enter into the realm of OT. Expand from Clear. A Clear is Clear on the first dynamic. Now it's time to try your thetan wings. OT I extroverts a being and brings about an awareness of himself as a thetan in relation to others and the physical universe.
II The next level, Section II O.T., expands and brings up confront to a point where you are able to confront the whole track and you are ready to tackle your next step, O.T. III. OT II
Next, OT II is a fantastic and powerful OT level! Here the solo auditor delves in great detail into the real history of a being on the Whole Track. One gains, upon the completion of OT II, the ability to confront the Whole Track. OT II toughens you up as a thetan for OT III, your next step.
OT II
This level opens up new horizons of sanity and understanding of Man and his aberrations culminating in the ability to fully confront the Whole Track. Thorough solo-auditing on OT II gets off enough charge so you can tackle OT III with confidence.
OT II
This level opens up new horizons of sanity and understanding of Man and his aberrations along the Time Track culminating in the ability to fully confront the Whole Track. OT II, done well, gets off enough charge so you can tackle OT III with confidence.
III The material of Section III O.T. is so vicious and of such immense power that no one before Ron has come close to penetrating the “Wall of Fire”. Ron did break through and then made the way through safe, stable and sure for others to follow. At OT III the barriers that obscure the ultimate truth of the universe are blown. OT III
The material of OT III is of immense magnitude and power. This is the highly confidential data which reveals the story of this sector of the galaxy and why this area and the planet are so aberrated.
It is so vicious that no one before Ron has come close to discovering anything of it's nature. Ron has called it the “Wall of Fire”. Ron says “It is very true that a great catastrophe occurred on this planet and in the other 75 planets which formed this Confederacy, 75 million years ago. It has since that time been a desert”, (Ron's Journal ’67).
On OT III one finds out why it is so urgently important that the mission of freeing beings be done now. Ron has done the work and now everyone can tread the way with total assurance.
OT III
The Wall of Fire - the level which determines the factors of becoming truly OT. Resolves all counter-intention and gives full certainty of self as a being and freedom from overwhelm. The disasters and subsequent contamination from the past is fully alleviated and totally understood. This level takes guts to confront but by honestly making it up to OT II one will have no trouble following the safe path that Ron has laid down.
OT III
The Wall of Fire! This level is the decisive level on the road to becoming truly OT! On OT III you clear away those factors that overwhelm your determinism on all dynamics and prevent you from being yourself.
OT III is a tough level, but it can be done with ease by following exactly in Ron's footsteps. An individual must have done the levels up to and including OT II and be a competent Solo Auditor.
OT III is really an incredible level!
pgm After the great “Wall of Fire” you emerge from the R6EW to OT III No Interference Band and move on to the O.T. Expansion Program. Here you complete any past auditing cycles and any required case handling in the AO HGC. OT EXPANSION PROGRAM
Right after OT III you complete the OT Expansion Program. This handles any needed completion of past auditing cycles in the AO HGC and any required Case Handling actions. The program fully sets a Pre-OT up for OT VII and OT III Expanded.
  OT EXPANSION PROGRAM
The OT Expansion Program is auditing done after the person is out of the No Interference Area (R6EW - OT III) or after OT III Expanded. The auditing can include all required case handling actions such as Dianetics, Expanded Grades, case clean-up or Expanded Dianetics. These actions are done in AOLA's HGC under our Class IX, HSST Case Supervisor.
VII After the O.T. Expansion Program you move to Section VII O.T. Which is your next step in preparation for O.T. III Expanded. On OT VII you learn how to fully extend your intention across a distance and project thought. The ability to communicate is restored at an OT level. OT VII
On OT VII you learn how to fully extend your intention across a distance and project thought.
Prior to solo materials for OT VII there is a preliminary auditing action to prepare your case for the solo auditing drills.
Gain the rehabilitation of intention!
OT VII
Teaches a Thetan to enhance his abilities to project intention. This level, in all its simplicity and directness, is a huge leap up the ladder towards total OT. It's a rehabilitating of one's former Thetan powers. If you didn't totally make it on OT III, you need OT VII. It will boost you up as a Thetan so you're strong enough to fully handle OT III.
OT VII
OT VII deals directly with the rehabilitation of your former thetan powers of intention. Learn to fully project your intention across a distance. With your OT VII gains you turn once again to the Wall of Fire. NEXT:
‘Clear News 81 (AOLA Edition)’, [Mar 73], page 5 addresses this as:
OT VII EP  (End Phenomena)
IIIX Section III O.T. Expanded follows OT VII. At OT III Expanded one realizes the full potential gain of OT III. One crosses the wall of fire for good - to emerge a free being able to confront and handle the physical universe without barriers. OT III EXPANDED
At OT III Expanded one realizes the full potential gain of OT III. One crosses the wall of fire for good to emerge a free being able to confront and handle the physical universe without barriers.
OT III Expanded is free to anybody successfully completing OT VII.
OT III EXPANDED
Allows one to fully confront and handle any residual effects of OT III. The Wall of Fire becomes a past hurdle on the road to full OT. The wins and gains are a huge expansion of oneself as an OT - completely unencumbered and free.
OT III EXPANDED
Through the Wall of Fire for good. The wins and gains are huge - the fullest possible gains from OT III!
IV Your next step, Section IV O.T., includes a Class VIII rundown and solo drills which bring you up to full cause over all sources of aberration on the whole track. OT IV
Next, on OT IV you receive a special rundown by a Class VIII Auditor to set you case up for the actual solo auditing drills. OT IV completely familiarizes a thetan with those factors that trapped him and made him anything less than OT, thus freeing him from those things and leaving him totally certain of himself as a being. After OT IV, a thetan cannot be again trapped. One begins to get into ARC fully with one's creations, knowing how they were created and why.
OT IV
Consists of an audited section and a solo section.
The audited section, audited by a Class VIII Specialist, polishes up the gains and latent abilities of past auditing and repairs any missed steps.
The Solo Section fully handles any uncertainties of self and lifts one totally above any Bank computations forever.
OT IV
OT IV has an audited section and a solo section.
The audited section, audited by a Class VIII Specialist, polishes up the gains and latent abilities of past auditing.
The Solo section fully handles any uncertainties of self and lifts one totally above any Bank computations forever.
V From OT IV you move to Section V O.T. Here you regain the ability to be in the physical universe without any fixated introversion into mest! OT V
After OT IV, OT V refamiliarizes a thetan exterior with the physical universe. This level serves as an introduction to the rehabilitation of his total abilities as a thetan. One learns at this time to be able to use the correct application of intelligence and force, so not to get into trouble when one begins to operate.
OT V
If you're OT IV and for some reason you're holding off doing this level, don't. First come into the AO for a consultation and find out why you're not moving on. When these factors are handled, you'll find OT V is a sheer joy. You'll achieve an OTs awareness of the physical universe.
OT V
On OT V you become fully re-familiarized as a thetan exterior with the physical universe. The farther into the realm of OT you get, the simpler it is. And this is a very big OT level.
VI Then at Section VI O.T. you learn how to see, move and operate outside the body at will! OT VI
Your next level, OT VI is the level where one starts to stretch and exercise those thetanish muscles that have been dormant for so long. One really gets into action as an OT. The ability gained on the completion of OT VI is being exterior and able to act pan-determinedly. You begin to move around in the universe and to be cause over it.
OT VI
Enables one to exteriorize at will and teaches one to operate outside his body.
Basic abilities of a Thetan are drilled and one moves into the band of pan-determinism over life and MEST.
OT VI
An incredible level! Exteriorize at will and be able to operate outside your body.
On OT VI basic abilities of a thetan are drilled and one moves into the band of pan-determinism over life and MEST.

Go back Some Auditor Classes defined
(1975-78 status quo)

These variations circumscriptions are found scattered in this ‘Dianetics and Scientology: Technical Dictionary’ and ‘What Is Scientology?’ (1978 edition). For clarity reason I have put them in a chronological sequence and provided for easy comparison and show how they relate to each other. A rather significant change was the abolishment of Standard Dianetics (1969) which was replaced with New Era Dianetics (1978). Interesting is also how the NED for OTs (NOTs) Auditor moved around on the charts first from being a Class IV Advanced Courses Specialist Auditor (1978) to finally a Class IX Auditor (1983).

from ‘Dianetics and Scientology: Technical Dictionary’ (1975 edition)

Dn HUBBARD STANDARD DIANETICS COURSE, teaches about the human mind, mental image pictures, the time track, locks, secondaries and engrams. The processes taught are Standard Dn auditing and Dn assists. (CG&AC 75) Abbr. HSDC.
(Note: Replaced with Hubbard New Era Dianetics Course since July 1978.)
Hubbard New Era Dianetics Course:  New Era Dianetics (N.E.D.) is a summary and refinement of Dianetics based upon 30 years of experience in the application of the subject, and additional research and breakthroughs made by L. Ron Hubbard. The student studying it and the auditor practicing it will find that if he follows its precision drills with precision he will be able to handle life and the spirit as never before. As this course contains many new skills to be learned, auditors who have been trained in Dianetics before need additional training to deliver New Era Dianetics.
(Note: It had moved to be placed following the Classes 0-IV since the 1982 chart, then since the 1983 chart it is listed as a Class V Auditor.)
0 HRS, Hubbard Recognized Scientologist.  A Class 0 auditor. This level teaches about communication. Processes taught are Level 0 processes and ARC SW processes. (CG&AC 75) Class 0 (Hubbard Recognized Scientologist):  This training level thoroughly covers communication, what it is and how to handle it, and trains a student how to audit a person to Grade 0, Communications Release. There is also a section on word clearing for those who have not yet been trained on how to word clear.
I HTS, Hubbard Trained Scientologist.  A Class I auditor. This level teaches about problems. The processes taught include objective processes and Level I processes, such as help and control processes. (CG&AC 75)  Class I (Hubbard Trained Scientologist):  Trains a student on the data of understanding and handling problems. A graduate of this course is able to audit another person to Grade I, Problems Release.
II HCA, Hubbard Certified Auditor.  A Class II auditor. This level teaches about overt acts and withholds. Among the processes taught are responsibility processes and integrity processes. (CG&AC 75)   Class II (Hubbard Certified Auditor):  This level deals with understanding and handling feelings of guilt people might have because of things they have done. A graduate of this level can audit another person to a Grade II, Relief Release.
III HPA, Hubbard Professional Auditor.  A Class III auditor. This level deals with ARC and ARC breaks. Listing and nulling and two-way comm are taught at this level, as well as change processes and ARC Break SW. (CG&AC 75)  Class III (Hubbard Professional Auditor):  Trains a student in recognizing and handling the upsets of others. The student when complete is able to audit another person to Grade III, Freedom Release.
IV HAA, Hubbard Advanced Auditor:  a Class IV auditor. This level teaches about service facsimiles and ability. Processes taught include certainty processing and overt justification processes. (CG&AC 75)   Class IV (Hubbard Advanced Auditor):  On this level a student is trained to handle fixed ideas and opinions in others that sometimes make them irrationally set in their ways. The student when complete can audit another person to Grade IV, Abilities Release. There is also a section on handling a person who has frequent ups and downs and lacks stability.
The training levels above from Class 0 to IV are often called the Academy Levels and are most often studied consecutively as a group.
NOTs  - Hubbard Class IV Advanced Courses Specialist is a Class IV, OT III auditor who has had specialized training to be able to administer to OT IIIs and above the “New Era Dianetics for OTs” Rundown, a major breakthrough based on research discoveries made by L. Ron Hubbard in 1978. (abbreviated HACS)
(Note: Since 1983 this is a Class IX Auditor or NOTs Auditor. See further notes at Class IX.)
V HVA, 1. Hubbard Validated Auditor.  A Class V auditor. This level is taught at Church of Scientology Saint Hill organizations and contains materials about the chronological development of Scn with full theory and application. (CG&AC 75)  2. Class V reviews all the classes and retrains where necessary and awards permanent classification for all the lower certificates as well as Class V. (The Auditor 8 (UK), [ca May-Jun 65])  Saint Hill Special Briefing Course (SHSBC):  First offered at the original Saint Hill in England, this course is an advanced auditor level and gives the student the chronological development of the materials of Dianetics and Scientology since the first books went into print in 1948. A graduate of this course is a Class V Hubbard Validated Auditor.
(Note: The 1983 and 1984 charts list an ‘HSA, Hubbard Specialist Auditor’ as a ‘New Class VI Auditor’. This seems to somewhat resemble (in regards to Review) the original Class V Auditor as it deals with “Repairs and Remedies of Cases”.
By this time the original Class V Auditor had become an NED Auditor, thus the classes moved up a place. The HSA turned to be listed as the HCIVGA (Hubbard Class IV Graduate Auditor) on the charts issued 1985-88. It appears then dropped from the 1990 chart.)
VI HSS, Hubbard Senior Scientologist.  A Class VI auditor. An HSS is a graduate of the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course. This course consists of the full practical application of Scn grades, repair, setups, assists and special cases tech up to Class VI. (CG&AC 75)  Senior Saint Hill Special Briefing Course:  This course gives the student the materials of a number of the more modern techniques to complement his thorough study of the basics on Class V. A graduate of this course is a Class VI, Hubbard Senior Scientologist.
VII HGA, Hubbard Graduate Auditor.  Class VII auditor. Only available to Sea Org or five year contracted Church staff. This level teaches the power processes and review auditing. It is not a prerequisite to Class VIII, however. It is delivered in Church of Scientology Saint Hill organizations. (CG&AC 75)   Class VII (Hubbard Graduate Auditor):  A very highly skilled level, this course deals with the delivery of the Power Processes, Grades V and VA. The course is only available to staff members and is not a prerequisite for other training levels which the public may take.
VIII HSTS, Hubbard Standard Technical Specialist.  A Class VIII auditor. The Class VIII Course teaches exact handling of all cases up to 100 per cent result, as well as Class VIII procedures, all case setup actions, all processes and corrective actions, as well as flubless Class VIII auditing. (CG&AC 75)
(“Class VIII material ended with HCO Bs at the end of 1968.”  LRH  (from HCOB 23 Dec 70 “Fast Courses”))
Class VIII Course (Hubbard Standard Technical Specialist):  The Class VIII Course trains a student on the exactness and precision of Dianetics and Scientology technology and how the exact application of the technology will always get the result.
IX CLASS IX, Hubbard Advanced Technical Specialist. The Class IX Course is taught at Saint Hill organizations and contains data concerning advanced procedures and developments since Class VIII. (CG&AC 75)  (abbreviated HATS)
(“The 1969—mid-1970 HCO Bs and materials are Class IX”  LRH  (from HCOB 23 Dec 70 “Fast Courses”))
(From a respons that I received from a highly trained auditor: “Covered rundowns that were issued after Class VIII such as the Int/Ext RD, the Audited section of OT VII which included specific L&N actions, also a Class IX could audit C/S Series 37R known as the High Low TA Assessment, which later became part of L11. To sum it up it included OT and Lower level repair or review actions that were released since the release of Class VIII and the Ability to C/S these actions.”)
Class IX Course (Hubbard Advanced Technical Specialist):  This level provides an update of the technology developed and released since the Class VIII Course. It brings one fully up-to-date on auditing.
(Note: Since 1983 this turns to be a NED for OTs (NOTs) Auditor (Ref. HCO PL 5 Oct 83 II “BPL 2 May 1971R Class IX Course Checksheet Cancelled” & HCO PL 5 Oct 83 IV “New Auditor Classifications Above Class IV”). Indicated on the charts as Hubbard Advanced Courses Specialist (HACS, abbreviated on 1980-82 charts as ACS). Be it noted that there is no actual relation between the original HATS and the present HACS)
(HCO PL 5 Oct 83 II “BPL 2 May 1971R Class IX Course Checksheet Cancelled” notes: “The data and skills originally taught on the Class IX Course when it was formed have since been included on the Academy Levels 0—IV Courses, the Hubbard Specialist Auditor Course (formerly titled the Class IV Graduate Auditor Course), the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course and the Hubbard Class VIII Course.”.)
X CLASS X, an advanced Scn course available only on Flag. It teaches L-10 OT, an upper level rundown whose basic tech comes from research into increasing OT powers. (CG&AC 75)
(“... and we are currently about to prepare orgs for Class X delivery WHEN ORGS CAN USE WHAT THEY HAVE.”  LRH  (from HCOB 23 Dec 70 “Fast Courses”))
Class X Course:  Trains a student in how to deliver the auditing level of L-10. Currently this course is available to staff only.
L-10 Auditing:  The “L” stands for list and L-10 is the designation given to this service. A precision technology that is delivered by a specially trained class of auditor — Class Xs. It handles doingness and causativeness with 23 separate, powerful actions, resulting in the increase of an individual’s general ability, perception and memory.
XI CLASS XI, an advanced Scn Course, available to Sea Org auditors only and is taught on Flag. It teaches L-11, the New Life Rundown and L-11X, the New Life Expansion Rundown. (CG&AC 75)  Class XI Course:  Trains the student in the techniques of delivering the auditing of L-11. Currently available to staff only.
L-11 Auditing:  A level consisting of 6 powerful actions to locate and handle the major personal difficulty on a person’s case. Delivered by a highly skilled auditor, it is also called the New Life Rundown as it gives to an individual a new life in truth.
XII CLASS XII, an advanced Scn course available to Sea Org auditors only and is taught on Flag. It teaches L-12, the Flag OT executive Rundown. (CG&AC 75)  Class XII Course:  On this level the student learns the theory and auditing skills necessary to deliver L-12. Currently available only to staff.
L-12 Auditing:  A new and vital rundown which L. Ron Hubbard has acknowledged as the most startling breakthrough in Scientology auditing since 1967. Again it is delivered by the most highly trained Class X-XII auditors. In handling very fundamental aspects of a person’s beingness, L-12 was developed to make a fully extroverted and stable thetan.

Back to Main Index The Auditor (2):  ‘Processing vs Training prerequisites’ or ‘Training for Preclears’  (1965-78)

This chapter aims to be an overview of how the required training on the processing side were reflected on the various Grade Charts in the time span 1965-78. In particular it unfolds the development of Solo Auditing (requirement for Grade VI) and the Clearing Course (Grade VII) and how this was represented on these Grade Charts. This route is referred to as the ‘non-professional route’ or the ‘PC route’. The professional route would have been to standardly enroll on the Class VI Auditor Course (SHSBC).

‘LRH ED 74 Int’, 25 Oct 66 “Training of Clears” further explains:

“The ‘PC route’ consists of a person being audited up through the grades including Power Processing and VA and then enrolling on the Solo Audit Course at Saint Hill, making Grade VI and then enrolling on the Clearing Course. They have little or no Academy training in most cases.”          LRH

This LRH ED also established:

“Persons who go Clear on the PC route (Solo Audit Course Saint Hill who did not do the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course) may skip lower level Academy requirements if they enroll on the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course after going Clear.”          LRH

Scientology dictionary entries:

“SOLO AUDITING, 1. the action of ‘solo auditing’ is not self-auditing. Solo auditing is done in a regular session in model session form. (HCOB 8 Dec 64)  2. in solo auditing the auditor is also the pc. This means that once the auditor has duplicated and understood the item or question the pc has also. (BTB 12 Dec 71 IV)”

(from ‘Dianetics and Scientology: Technical Dictionary’)

“SOLO AUDITOR, a standard tech auditor who is applying standard tech to himself as a PC or pre-OT. (FO 1588)”

“SOLO AUDITOR COURSE, the Solo Auditor Course is designed to teach the data and skills of solo auditing essential for attaining Grade VI Release, Clear and the OT levels, and to produce a standard Solo Auditor who can competently apply the data and auditing skills and can solo audit. (BPL 12 Dec 71RC)”

(from ‘Modern Management Technology Defined’ (released 1976))

A first reference that actually made reference to the subject of Solo Auditing appears to have been HCOB 8 Dec 64 “Solo Auditing and R6 EW Solo Auditing” . Which is about Grade VI that required this Solo Auditing. It made the presupposition that a Scientologist engaged in Solo Auditing is at least a Provisional Class VI Auditor.

“Let me call to your attention that when you bring a student in onto R6, he is for the first time on solo audit. It's going to take him some time to get used to that, to run a meter.”          LRH
(from SHSBC lecture #52, renumbered 1991: #415 “Level VII”, given on 23 Feb 65)

(Note: Today this lecture is listed as confidential and it is exempted from inclusion in the 1991 public release of the lectures, although it wasn't at its original release and a very long time after that)

Solo Auditing had been around although it was not until October 1965 that:

“Solo Audit Course is inaugurated at Saint Hill for those non-professional preclears who, obtaining Grade V Release, wish to go on to Grade VI and Grade VII.”          LRH
(from HCO PL 25 Oct 65 “Saint Hill Solo Audit Course”)

Thus far one was required to enroll on the Class VI Auditor Course (SHSBC). The announcement came with the notice that:

“It is to be fully understood that this course applies only to solo audit and gives no auditor certificate but only a grade of Release certificate when complete. A person taking this course is not to audit others above any auditor class the student actually holds.

It is further to be fully understood that any trouble the solo auditor gets into must be resolved by a proper Class VI auditor in an organization and that such assistance is at the student's own expense and is not part of the offered courses.”          LRH

And further in regards to the Clearing Course:

“When this course is completed, the Grade VI Release is eligible to enroll on the Saint Hill Clearing Course on a solo audit basis for Grade VII Clear. No other certificate will be given than a grade certificate. And the person is given no right to audit others. But the person may attain Clear by this route.”          LRH
(all above quotations from HCO PL 25 Oct 65 “Saint Hill Solo Audit Course”)

It also proposed the option for those that had already enrolled on the Class VI Auditor Course to make a transfer to the Solo Audit Course but one was allowed to do this “only with permission of LRH”  LRH  (from HCO PL 12 Nov 65 “Transfers From SHSBC to Solo Audit Course”).

Go back Presentation on the various Grade Charts
(Grade VI to OT VIII)

This aims to be a detailed overview of the “Class of Auditor Required” and “Training Required” columns as found on the Grade Charts issued in the time span 1965-78. On these I focus on Grade VI to OT VIII for the simple reason that starting with Grade VI it required you to actually be trained. Grade VI required Solo Auditing. The next step to Clear (Grade VII) required you to do the Clearing Course. Most of the steps that followed (OT levels) also required Solo Auditing.
This overview of these Grade Chart entries give you perspective on how the required training steps developed and what was implemented when.

On the earliest Grade Charts these steps are indicated as “Class VI for Self”, thus requiring you to become a Class VI Auditor first. Both the Solo Auditor Course and the Clearing Course however appear more specifically on target without slowing you down on the processing side if you had to embark on the rather extensive Saint Hill Special Briefing Course (SHSBS). Adding these 2 courses thus was streamlining your progress regarding processing.
The 1st January 1968 Grade Chart is the first to make actual mention of Solo Audit Course and Clearing Course. Interesting is that this chart also noted that this Solo Audit Course required you to also have done the Hubbard Dianetic Auditor Course. The 1st September 1969 Grade Chart then dropped it and the June 1970 Grade Chart instead puts it as a preference.
Then since the January 1975 Grade Chart the Solo Auditor Course, besides them being listed in the “Class of Auditor Required” and “Training Required” columns, it also gets now separately listed between Grade VA and Grade VI on the processing side of the chart although it being a training action (see page “History of the Grade Chart - b) Detailed analysis”, chapter “Aug 1974-Jan 1975: ‘The Bridge to a New World’”, section “The Solo Auditor Course (Jul 70)”).

An note has to be made about the (May) 1965 Grade Chart as Grade VI was actually listed on there as Clear. Respectively Grade VII was listed as OT. Then after the release of this chart it was discovered that the actual state of Clear was higher than was expected/assumed and the next chart reflected that change that then called for the Clearing Course (Grade VII).

Back to Main Index ‘The Bridge to a New World’  or  ‘The Bridge to Total Freedom’ ?

Bridge drawing from Advance!, ca Apr 73In 1975 it was introduced as ‘The Bridge to a New World’ which name was maintained in 1980, then in 1983 it turned to ‘The Bridge to Total Freedom’. Which would actually be more appropriate? Personally I think that the earlier name resembles a better sense of reality to people, it's clear for all what its purpose and aims are or one could imagine what they would be like. Anyone can have some notion or idea what it may or could involve, and can at least to some degree identify himself there as it is on a simple down to earth level. It is as simple as to better the living conditions for man. The presently name used is more unclear. What does Total Freedom actually mean? What could it mean? Do what you like with any lack of restraints? Overthrow governments and remove any kind of control, good or bad? It could to some resemble anarchism if taken to an extreme. It could stir certain ideas into persons if they happen to take it the wrong way. I remember myself being puzzled about it years ago when I first was confronted with it. “Total Freedom? What's that? What's it mean?”

I don't know who is responsible for changing the name of this Grade Chart (it was changed somewhere between December 1980 and mid-1983). True is that the idea of a Bridge to Total Freedom has been expressed in earlier times. On a Grade Chart released in 1966 it was called the ‘Routing and Gradation Chart to Clear and Total Freedom’. Underneath the Scientology Processing side of the Chart it noted that ‘Clear means Total Freedom’. Then in 1968 it was L. Ron Hubbard himself with an article in ‘Ability 207’, [Mar-Apr 68] entitled “Bridge from Chaos to Total Freedom”. And in 1973 an anonymous person(s) issued ‘Ability 267’, [Oct 73] that carries the article entitled “Ron's Bridge to Total Freedom”. All this however does not have to mean that all of a sudden the actual Grade Chart should be named like that also. In fact in spite of these articles the 1975 and the 1980 release of the Grade Chart still named it “The Bridge to a New World”. What we have to take in consideration is how those that newly get acquainted with Scientology are going to take this name that is put on top of this Grade Chart. See, these persons get into that building, they see these people, and they look around, and then their eye catches this chart hanging on that wall and they think: “Hmm, Total Freedom...?”. Of course its name should be as neutral as possible. Total Freedom is somewhere up there in the air, although our feet are steadily walking on the surface of this planet earth. One should be practical about it. I don't think that Total Freedom is neutral. Total Freedom is also more on a personal ‘I’ level. Obviously New World relates to a much broader perspective, meaning all those wandering around on this planet. According to my experiences this is how people within this community usually perceive it. Well, it is not only about you. Anyway these are my personal thoughts about this.

Back to Main Index List of Grade Charts released  (1965-present time)

These charts may list various copyright years, the latest year given you may assume is the year it was issued. A few charts are marked with an arterisk which means that no actual copies have been consulted or are not verified to exist. Do you have any of the charts indicated as such or charts not listed at all, please contact me!

Change of copyright:  It was not until the 2nd half of 1986 that the “L. Ron Hubbard Library” copyright came into use. This may be the reason why the Grade Charts issued for 1990, 1991 & 1995 are skipping to note any earlier years that carry the previous copyright “L. Ron Hubbard”. Although the Grade Chart for 1998 does make mention of the earlier years again. Odd in a sense is that the Grade Chart for 1988 & the one for 1998 for some reason are skipping listing the year 1986 and instead list various earlier copyright years. We may also ask the question why we actually have the copyright years 1986 and 1988, as these appear fully identical to the Grade Chart issued and copyrighted for the year 1985.

26 November 1963 (©1963)  Not really a chart, just lists the 0-VII Auditor Classifications  ‘Classification Chart Issue One’ as found in HCO PL 26 Nov 63 “Certificate and Classification Changes Everyone Classified”. Amended by HCO PL 11 Dec 63 “Classification for Everyone”
   1965 (May) (©1965), UK
Published by the Hubbard Communications Office World Wide
Printed by the Courier Printing & Publishing Co. Ltd., Tunbridge Wells
This first chart does not divide up the Training and Processing side as such. Although it focuses on the Training characteristics.
Lists up to Class VII Auditor, Clear is placed at Grade VI, Grade VII notes ‘O.T. Processes for Self’ & ‘Power Processes on Lower Case Levels’
(take note that the phrase ‘O.T. Processes for Self’ is omitted from mention in the reproduction of this chart as issued in ‘The Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology’ volumes)
Supplement to ‘The Auditor 8’, [ca May-Jun 65]
Also found reprinted following HCO PL 5 May 65 “Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart” in ‘The Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology’ volumes (1976 & 1991 release)
A replica on small format is included in the DVD release (July 2008) of filmed lecture Saint Hill Special Briefing Course lecture #66: “Classification and Gradation”, given on 21 Jul 66 (not listed as part of the SHSBC since 1991)
   26th September 1965 (©1965), UK
Published by the Hubbard Communications Office, World Wide
Printed by the Courier Printing & Publishing Co. Ltd., Tunbridge Wells
First chart that separates it into 2 prominent columns as follows: ‘For Training in Scientology’ and ‘For Scientology Processing’.
In essence lists about the same as previous chart except that it lists up to Clear and Class VII Auditor, Clear is now placed at Grade VII. Chart notes “Clear today is a higher state than previously. We once called ‘Clear’ what is today called RELEASE.”
Per HCOB 27 Sept 65 “Release Gradation Additional Data” this was issued with ‘The Auditor 10’, [Oct 65].
It is reported: “There was the Chart Mary Sue drew up in 1965 and the cutative chart of early 1966 which Ron deep-sixed.”. Was this the chart drawn up by Mary Sue?
*  1966 [early]    No copy thus far has surfaced (see notice at previous chart).
SHSBC lecture 71 (renumbered 434) “The Classification Chart and Auditing”, 26 Jul 66 notes: “since the interim issue of early 1966 dropped several points off this chart that were vital to it and made it relatively unworkable”. It may(?) be most probable that the not mentioning of Dianetics that had made it relatively unworkable
   ©1966 [Jul/Aug?], UK
Published by the Hubbard Communications Office World Wide.
Printed by St. Clements Press Ltd., London, England.
Technically identical to the 26th September 1965 chart excepting for adding Dianetics on the chart. This is the very first chart that lists the ‘Dianetic Auditor’ and ‘Dianetic Release’  “... and the modern one which is about to be issued” (from SHSBC lecture 71 (renumbered 434) “The Classification Chart and Auditing”, 26 Jul 66).  Could that be this one?
Odd looking chart (large poster), the background is not white but instead full with ancient sculptures and buildings in rather dark brown shading colours. It makes the chart hard to read. Various explanation is given on a left flap (part of the poster) that has a white background
   1st December 1966
(no copyright or printing information found on chart)
The notable addition is that it added ‘Straight Wire’ (Recall Release) on the chart.
First chart to add an ‘Attainment’ column
May(?) have been inserted in ‘The Auditor’ (unconfirmed)
   1st January 1968 (©1968), UK
Published by The Department of Publications World Wide, Saint Hill Manor, East Grinstead, Sussex , England.
Basically lists up to Clear although the top row does show a general OT section, reference is made to Section 3.
‘Attainment’ column was renamed ‘Abilities Attained’
May(?) have been inserted in ‘The Auditor’ (unconfirmed)
1st September 1969 (©1969), ASHO LA  Although Dianetics was listed on the chart since mid-1966, it was not until the release of this chart that the headings of the respective columns got adjusted to reflect that. First chart to list this as ‘For Dianetic and Scientology Training’ and ‘For Dianetic and Scientology Processing’
Lists up to OT VI and Class VIII Auditor.
Standard Dianetic Auditor listed on chart
Printed on cheap paper. Loosely inserted in ‘The Auditor 65 (UK Edition)’, [ca Jul 71]. Curious enough page 5 notes: “If you have not received your 1970 Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart, write to your Advanced Organization Saint Hill bookstore.”. Why was for example not the December 1970 AOLA chart included instead of this one? Compare with ‘The Auditor 65 (US Edition)’, [ca Jun 71] that includes instead a drawing of the Bridge as a centre-spread.
*  1st December 1969, [UK?]  (assumably(?) same as 1st September 1969 chart)  Someone reported/suggested to me that this would have been inserted in ‘The Auditor’. The existence of a chart with this date is confirmed by HCOB 12 Jun 70 “Programming of Cases”.
This could be the UK release of the September 1969 ASHO LA or of the March 1970 AOLA chart.
Anyone have a copy for me! Please contact me!
March 1970 (©1969), AOLA  Only some minor adjustments compared with the 1st Sept 1969 chart. The most significant one being that the HDC (Hubbard Dianetics Course) prerequisite for Class 0 was moved to be listed at Class V & VI  This chart appears almost fully identical with the 1st September 1969 chart, it also listed a different contact address in the right lower corner
   Flag, June 1970 (©1970), [USA]
Composition by Athena Publications.
Same with:  Printed in Denmark by Fritz Schur A/S
Lists up to OT VIII. OT VII and OT VIII are indicated as ‘to be released’.
Divided traits in 2 columns: ‘Ability Gained’ & ‘Inability Lost’
The USA print and Denmark print appear textual identical although the Denmark version has added background illustrations and measures about 25% larger in size then the USA print.
First chart to actually appear in red print and in full large poster form.
Special notice: This chart had erroneously listed the EP for OT VII at OT II. Instead OT VII was lacking any circumscription for its EP although the chart was listing the EP for OT VIII. This was all corrected in the December 1970 Revision of this Grade Chart.
   Flag, June 1970
Revised AOLA Dec 70 (©1970), [USA]
Composition by Athena Publications.
Released: HCOB 20 Aug 71 II “Classification and Gradation - Abbreviations Explained”
Text for ‘Ability Gained’ & ‘Inability Lost’ for OT VII had been filled in (text moved from OT II Section). OT II text had been restored as per pre-June 1970 charts. Prerequisties for Class VI Auditor adjusted  Virtually identical to June 1970 chart. Excepting only that OT VII had been released since.
Corrective and updated version of the previous June 1970 chart (see notes at previous chart in this table).
Flag, January 1975 (©1974), California  First time it is called:
“Bridge to a New World”
.
Columns ‘Ability Gained’ & ‘Inability Lost’ revert back to just one column. Also OT Sections I to VIII now skipped mention of any EP traits.
Level OT VIII was now indicated as ‘OT VIII AND ABOVE’.
Class IX, X, XI & XII Auditor are listed.
It added listing of ‘OT VII Processes’ and ‘OT III Expanded’ between OT III and OT IV
Supplement to ‘The Auditor 107’: US Edition (fastened with staples), UK Edition (loosely inserted). Charts appear to be identical (paper, print, print info, etc.). Both these have the print in the left upper corner: “Supplement to the Auditor No. 107”.
A variation of the chart is known without this additional text in the left upper corner. Slight changes in design, the most obvious one being that this one does not seem to have printed a drawn bridge in yellow-orange colours in the background of it (pictured in ‘Source 27’, June-Jul 80, see page 10).
*  1976 (©1974 and 1976), California
Scientology Publications Organization, Copenhagen 1976
Appears technical wise identical to January 1975 chart  Only known in German language, rather unlikely that this would exist as an English version. This chart works best as a translation of the January 1975 chart into German that was simply released in 1976
   1978 (Dec)
Included in ‘What Is Scientology?’ (1978 Edition), released Christmas 1978. See pages 30-47 (Training side) & 56-65 (Processing side).
As far as known this has not been released as a separately issued poster that could be put on the wall. If you know anything worthwhile about this then please contact me!
Standard Dianetics replaced with New Era Dianetics (NED).
(Audited) NOTs listed on chart following OT III .
‘The Auditor 161 (US Edition)’, Jul 79 refers to this as only a “Preview of the Newest Grade Chart” and it being just an “advance printing”. Therewith indicating that a separately issued chart was forthcoming. Though this is unconfirmed to actually have been issued at that time, this must have turned to be the later released 1980 chart issued almost 1½ years later!
This seems confirmed by that both ‘Source 27’, June-Jul 80, page 10 and ‘Advance! 66’, [ca Sept 80], page 12 still picture a 1975 chart!

Grade V, VA & VI only to be done if not gone Clear on Dianetics (NED).
(Most noteworthy and do take note that this is NOT indicated on this chart, nonetheless this was clearly directed by HCOB 24 Sept 78 III “Dianetic Clear” and HCOB 25 Jun 70RA (Revised 6 Oct 78) II “Glossary of C/S Terms”). This is probably a case of having arrived to late at the printer's to have it implemented, resulting in a wait of 2 years prior to having a displayable chart to show to the public reflecting this critical change)
   ©1970, 1974, 1980 [Dec]
Produced by the Flag Marketing Bureau
Solo NOTs listed on chart following Audited NOTs.
Audited NOTs & Solo NOTs listed together with the original OT Levels V, VI & VII.
First notice of an Alternate Route to Clear on chart, although not calling it that. It states at Clear column: “CLEARING COURSE MATERIALS (Unless person has gone Clear at some point earlier on Grade Chart materials, with the state fully verified by a Dianetic Clear Special Intensive.)”, thus also introducing the DCSI (later called CCRD) on the chart.
It deleted the Class V Auditor
Offered for sale as a large poster and in handy small size (folded) in ‘Ability 344’, [Dec 80]
   Flag, 19 January 1982 (©1982) Temporary Issue
“Until the full final Chart can be printed, this issue is provided for Scientologists, for registration, auditing and C/Sing purposes. It may be reproduced in magazines or reproduced on lightweight paper for mailings or as an insert.”
The corrective version of the HCOB added following this: “Registrars and orgs can take these mimeo sheets and with scotch tape make a larger chart and display them.”
(from HCOB 19 Jan 82)
NED (Dianetics) moved to be received after the Grades.
Grade Chart does not list OT IV, V, VI and VII. It then does list OT Drug Rundown, Audited NOTs, Solo NOTs Auditing Course & Solo NOTs Completion, that got rechristened reissued as New OT IV-VII only 2 months later.
Obviously the original OT levels IV-VII had been dropped since 19 January 1982
Alternate Route to Clear fully listed on chart (those that went Clear on NED and the Alternate Route are listed underneath each other).
As HCOB 19 Jan 82 “New – Streamlined Classification and Gradation Chart” with respectively 8 and 12 pages (Grade and Class Chart).
There exists a corrective version of this HCOB with ERRATUM front-sheet (undated) saying “Please replace your current pages with these new corrected ones.”. It contains the HCOB itself; Attachment 1, page 1-8 (Grade Chart) & Attachment 2, page 4 (Class Chart), the corrections were of a very minor nature.
HCOB says: ‘Assisted by Senior C/S International’, front-sheet says: ‘for Snr C/S International’. Initials on both: DM (= David Mayo) [Note that the typist initials on the front-sheet also carry: dm, although this stands for Donna Morey, Mimeo I/C Flag.]
  ©1982 (Mar)  Temporary Issue [USA]
©1982 (no postal stamp with date on my copy of this mailer) [USA]
First time it lists New OT levels IV, V, VI & VII (=OT Drug Rundown, Audited NOTs & Solo NOTs rechristened) which took the place of the previous original OT level IV-VII.
OT levels are listed up to New OT XI.
The title of the chart added noting “New Streamlined” (not dropped till 1990 chart).
It deleted the Expanded Dianetics Auditor (training) and Expanded Dianetics Completion (processing)
Inserted in ‘Source - Special Edition’, [Mar-Apr 82].
Same in ‘The Auditor 176 (US Edition)’, [ca May 82], ditto ‘The Auditor 177 (US Edition)’, [ca Jun 82], in both issues printed on middle page (page 4-5).
Also smaller and rearranged put together as a mailer: “New Grade Chart” and with notes from AOLA and send to the Scientology public.
The 1982 Temporary Issue of the chart announced the forthcoming release of a “full issue” of this chart, this has turned to be the 1983 copyrighted chart. This appears confirmed by ‘SO ED 2373 Int’, 22 Oct 83 “The Road Out” that makes no mention about any inbetween released chart
©1983 (early Oct)  Printed in USA
Same with:  Printed in Denmark
 First time it is called:
“Bridge to Total Freedom”
.
Alternate Route to Clear (as brief summary) listed on the right side of the chart in a separate column.
OT levels are listed up to New OT XV.
The Class V Auditor reappears which this time around presented now the NED Auditor
Except for the printing notices the USA and the Denmark print (poster format) appear identical. The USA print has creamcoloured paper and appears professionally printed. Denmark release is on white paper and looks like a copy made of the USA release, thicker text, rougher.
The ‘FSM Selection Pack’ that issued the brand new FSM Series policy letters (8 Nov 84) included a medium sized version of this chart (USA print). Although this should actually have included the revised mid-1984 chart.
This chart makes reference to HCO PL 25 Sept 79RA (Revised 20 Jul 83), this places its release at least at about the 2nd half of 1983. Then ‘International Scientology News 4’, [ca Feb 84] initially sets its release at November 1983. Although ‘SO ED 2373 Int’, 22 Oct 83 “The Road Out” does already make mention of it. Then HCO PL 5 Oct 83 II “BPL 2 May 1971R Class IX Course Checksheet Cancelled” places it at early October 1983.
‘The Auditor 189 (US Edition)’, [Jan-Feb 84] refers on page 2 to the New Grade Chart   & ‘Advance! 82’, [early 84] offered for sale Grade Charts sized Large, Medium & Small. This must have been for this Grade Chart
©1983, 1984 [Nov]  Printed in USA  Bridge itself appears about identical to previous chart, although extra services were listed on the sides.
OT I turned New OT I on chart.
It introduced FPRD as an available service
I only know about a medium sized copy of this. A poster sized version may or may not have been issued. It was inserted in a newspaperformat folder (8 pages) send out as promo, entitled “Ron's New Streamlined Grade Chart”, giving notices of the chart. A date given in this promo gives “On November 17, 1984...”, referring to various announcements made “... at the Flag Land Base at a very special event”, one being: “Target set for New OT VIII & IX! When 750 pre-OTs complete New OT VII, New OT VIII and New OT IX will be released!!!”
©1983, 1984, 1985 (Dec)  Printed in USA This chart as printed in The Auditor only note ©1985  Various minor changes and different graphical design.
Alternate Route to Clear listed at the bottom of the chart, still as a brief summary.
Dianetics Clear Special Intensive turned Clear Certainty Rundown counseling
In ‘The Auditor 200 (US Edition)’, [ca Dec 85], ditto ‘The Auditor 201 (US Edition)’, [ca Jan 86], in both issues printed in black on middle page (page 4-5). A poster sized chart is suspected to exist.
Per ‘Advance! 88’, [Dec 85] a copy could be gotten by writing to the Letter Registrar at the Advanced Organization.
Also included in a Dianetics Field Staff Member Sales Kit from 1989. On the backside of it we find printed the Hubbard chart of Human Evaluation and Dianetics Processing (from book ‘Science of Survival’)
*  ©1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 [1st half]  Identical to 1985 chart  Only version known to me of this Grade Chart is actually in German. An English version is unconfirmed to exist and may not have been issued.
This German language chart is still copyrighted ‘L. Ron Hubbard’, and must therefore have been issued at least during the 1st half of 1986
   ©1983, 1984, 1985   ©1988
 Printed in USA
Identical to 1985 chart  Only known to me as a rather small sized chart which after being folded 4 times looks like a small packet.
The year 1988 is copyrighted ‘L. Ron Hubbard Library’. The years 1983-1985 note ‘L. Ron Hubbard. Revisions copyright’
©1986, 1988, 1990  Printed in USA  Alternate Route to Clear listed on Bridge itself again (more detailed)
The title of the chart dropped noting “New Streamlined” and exchanged it with “Scientology”.
Large chart in red print. Also as 2-colour version (red-yellow) included in Charts Package, see ‘Advance! 104’, [Apr 90] (I assume this is the 1990 chart).
All charts from here on out only copyrighted ‘L. Ron Hubbard Library’
   ©1986, 1988, 1990, 1991
(chart does not give indication of where printed or who produced it)
Alternate Route to Clear listed with full details of all the steps.
The Expanded Dianetics Auditor reappears although now renamed as Class VA Graduate Auditor
A 55½x86cm sized chart with light red print was inserted in ‘The Auditor 243 (ASHO)’, 1992. The same also exists on thin paper with dark red print (taken as US version).
There exists also a 54½x81cm sized chart of this with dark red print and a different design, could this be an European version(?)
©1986, 1988, 1990, 1994  ‘TRs and Objectives’ and ‘Scientology Drug Rundown’ had turned ‘Optional (As determined by the Case Supervisor)’  Only know to me as a fancy looking insert (poster sized) in the periodical ‘International Scientology News 34’, [ca mid 1994]
   ©1986, 1988, 1990, 1995

©1986, 1988, 1990, 1995
 Swedish text
2 slightly different charts issued with ©1995. The ordinary edition is technically identical with the 1994 chart.  Main difference in this Printed in Spain & Swedish text variation appears to be that the listing of the Alternate Route to Clear is listed to the right of (beside) the route for those that did go Clear on NED
(this is upheld in today's charts)
Poster sized chart found included in Field Staff Member Information Packs that were issued during that time. The Printed in Spain variation is only known to me as a fairly small sized chart folded 2 times. The Swedish text version comes in poster sized and medium sized formats.
The insert of ‘The Auditor 253 (ASHO)’, [ca Dec 94] notes charts for sale Laminated or Unlaminated 24' x 36', this is probably the 1995 chart
   ©1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1998
(chart gives no indication of where printed or who produced it)
‘The Auditor 277 (ASHO)’, [Nov-Dec 98] introduced this as a “New, Updated Grade Chart!”. Although compared with the 1995 chart (Printed in Spain & Swedish text version only) they appear identical in every aspect (design and all)  Poster sized chart with dark red print on regular paper. An identical one, half the size, and on thin paper was inserted  in ‘The Auditor 277 (ASHO)’, [Nov-Dec 98]. ‘The Auditor 286 (ASHO)’, [Jan-Feb 2000] inserted a large copy of this chart (new print, differently folded). Also included on a cdrom as a pdf-file, released by ‘I HELP’  (organization that gives support to auditors in the field).
All copyrighted ‘L. Ron Hubbard Library’ although technically this is incorrect for the years 1982-1985.
This is the Grade Chart that at present commonly is used in promo packs. For example we find it included in the ‘Flag Field Staff Member Kit’ (issued 2006) issued at the Flag Land Base (Clearwater, Fl)
©2002  Technically identical to previous Grade Chart.
New more glamorous design with colours, fanciful columns etc.. Although something similar appears to have already been used also at an earlier date
This appears to be the Grade Chart that is usually displayed in the Scientology organizations at present. Not available as a folding poster (cardboard doesn't fold well), instead it is rolled up

Go back Condensed list of Grade Charts released with added their measurement

From May 65 to January 1975 the different releases of the Grade Chart were distributed in just one size as far as known. Starting with December 1980 they were available in different sizes.
The physical chart started out humbly sized, then it grew in size. The from US released June & December 1970 charts were fairly large and packed with text. The from Denmark released chart from June 1970 was huge (the largest of them all). The 1980 chart was still huge but had less text on it. Then it shrunk again to about half that size. Since 2002 the various Scientology organizations displayed this coloured and printed on cardboard version.

‘Have no copy’ in this table simply means that I don't have it and was thus unable to confirm it. Do you have any charts you wish to part from (including foreign -other than English- charts), or have any additional information about charts, or updates for my list, then feel free to contact me.
